The 18th edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) will be held at the Harare International Conference Centre on 23 March 2019. The award ceremony was scheduled for 16 February 2019. Organisers say the ceremony has been moved forward due to logistical planning.
The National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) is the premier award given by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) in recognition of outstanding achievements in the arts and culture. The inaugural NAMA was held in February 2002 honouring artists who excelled in 2001. Since then, NAMA award ceremonies have been held in February of each year to recognise artists who would have excelled in the previous year.
The theme of the 18th edition of the NAMA award ceremony is “African Royalty”. In a comment to the Chronicle newspaper National Arts Council of Zimbabwe acting communications and marketing manager Cathrine Mthombeni said it speaks to the quality and competitiveness of art products from Africa.
The theme speaks to the idea of our artists producing work that tells the proudly Zimbabwean story in a quality and global standard. The world is hungry for Zimbabwean works of art from film, visual arts, music, dance, literature and these should be packaged and marketed accordingly.
The 18th edition of the NAMA award ceremony received a total number of 1 436 entries. Those who submitted include production houses, studios, stables, galleries, organisations, associations, groups, artistes, monitors and/or the public.
